(5) They have no knowledge of it, nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.
(6) Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not believe in this message, [and] out of sorrow.

Explanation in English Ibn Kathir (Abridged)
Ayahs 1-5
Which was revealed in Makkah
What has been mentioned about the Virtues of this Surah and the first and last ten Ayat
Imam Ahmad recorded that Al-Bara' said: "A man recited Al-Kahf and there was an animal in the house which began acting in a nervous manner. He looked, and saw a fog or cloud overhead. He mentioned this to the Prophet , who said:
(Keep on reciting so and so, for this is the tranquillity which descends when one reads Qur'an or because of reading Qur'an;) This was also recorded in the Two Sahihs. This man who recited it was Usayd bin Al-Hudayr, as we have previously mentioned in our Tafsir of Surat Al-Baqarah. Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Ad-Darda' that the Prophet said:
(Whoever memorizes ten Ayat from the beginning of Surat Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.) This was also recorded by Muslim, Abu Dawud, An-Nasa'i and At-Tirmidhi. According to the version recorded by At-Tirmidhi,
(Whoever memorizes three Ayat from the beginning of Al-Kahf.) He said, it is "Hasan Sahih. " In his Mustadrak, Al-Hakim recorded from Abu Sa`id that the Prophet said:
(Whoever recites Surat Al-Kahf on Friday, it will illuminate him with light from one Friday to the next.) Then he said: "This Hadith has a Sahih chain, but they (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it." Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it in his Sunan from Al-Hakim, then he narrated with his own chain that the Prophet said:
(Whoever recites Surat Al-Kahf as it was revealed, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Revelation of the Qur'an brings both Good News and a Warning
In the beginning of this Tafsir, we mentioned that Allah, praises His Holy Self at the beginning and end of matters, for He is the One to be praised in all circumstances, all praise and thanks be to Him, in the beginning and in the end. He praises Himself for revealing His Mighty Book to His Noble Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, which is the greatest blessing that Allah has granted the people of this earth. Through the Qur'an, He brings them out of the darkness into light. He has made it a Book that is straight, neither distorted nor confusion therein. It clearly guides to a straight path, plain and manifest, giving a warning to the disbelievers and good news to the believers. This is why Allah says:
(and has not placed therein any crookedness.) meaning, there is nothing twisted or confusing about it. But He has made it balanced and straightforward as He said;
((He has made it) straight), meaning straightforward,
(to give warning of a severe punishment from Him,) meaning, to those who oppose His Prophet and disbelieve in His Book, He issues a warning of severe punishment hastened in this world and postponed to the world Hereafter.
(from Him) means, from Allah. For none can punish as He punishes and none is stronger or more reliable than Him.
(and to give good news to the believers,) means, those who believe in this Qur'an and confirm their faith by righteous actions.
(that they shall have a fair reward.) means, a beautiful reward from Allah.
(They shall abide therein) means, in what Allah rewards them with, and that is Paradise, where they will live forever.
(forever.) means, for always, never ending or ceasing to be.
(And to warn those who say, "Allah has begotten a child.") Ibn Ishaq said: "These are the pagan Arabs, who said, `We worship the angels who are the daughters of Allah."'
(No knowledge have they of such a thing, ) meaning, this thing that they have fabricated and made up.
(nor had their fathers.) meaning, their predecessors.
(Mighty is the word) This highlights the seriousness and enormity of the lie they have made up. Allah says:
(Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths.) meaning, it has no basis apart from what they say, and they have no evidence for it apart from their own lies and fabrications. Hence Allah says:
(They utter nothing but a lie.)
Reason why this Surah was revealed
Muhammad bin Ishaq mentioned the reason why this Surah was revealed. He said that an old man from among the people of Egypt who came to them some forty-odd years ago told him, from `Ikrimah that Ibn `Abbas said: "The Quraysh sent An-Nadr bin Al-Harith and `Uqbah bin Abi Mu`it to the Jewish rabbis in Al-Madinah, and told them: `Ask them (the rabbis) about Muhammad, and describe him to them, and tell them what he is saying. They are the people of the first Book, and they have more knowledge of the Prophets than we do.' So they set out and when they reached Al-Madinah, they asked the Jewish rabbis about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They described him to them and told them some of what he had said. They said, `You are the people of the Tawrah and we have come to you so that you can tell us about this companion of ours.' They (the rabbis) said, `Ask him about three things which we will tell you to ask, and if he answers them then he is a Prophet who has been sent (by Allah); if he does not, then he is saying things that are not true, in which case how you will deal with him will be up to you. Ask him about some young men in ancient times, what was their story For theirs is a strange and wondrous tale. Ask him about a man who travelled a great deal and reached the east and the west of the earth. What was his story And ask him about the Ruh (soul or spirit) -- what is it If he tells you about these things, then he is a Prophet, so follow him, but if he does not tell you, then he is a man who is making things up, so deal with him as you see fit.' So An-Nadr and `Uqbah left and came back to the Quraysh, and said: `O people of Quraysh, we have come to you with a decisive solution which will put an end to the problem between you and Muhammad. The Jewish rabbis told us to ask him about some matters,' and they told the Quraysh what they were. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, `O Muhammad, tell us,' and they asked him about the things they had been told to ask. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
(I will tell you tomorrow about what you have asked me.) but he did not say `If Allah wills.' So they went away, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed for fifteen days without any revelation from Allah concerning that, and Jibril, peace be upon him, did not come to him either. The people of Makkah started to doubt him, and said, `Muhammad promised to tell us the next day, and now fifteen days have gone by and he has not told us anything in response to the questions we asked.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt sad because of the delay in revelation, and was grieved by what the people of Makkah were saying about him. Then Jibril came to him from Allah with the Surah about the companions of Al-Kahf, which also contained a rebuke for feeling sad about the idolators. The Surah also told him about the things they had asked him about, the young men and the traveler. The question about the Ruh was answered in the Ayah;
(And they ask you concerning the Ruh (the spirit); say: "The Ruh...") 17:85.
Ayahs 6-8
Do not feel sorry because the Idolators do not believe Allah consoles His Messenger for his sorrow
(So destroy not yourself in sorrow for them.) 35:8
(And grieve not over them.) 16:127
(It may be that you are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers.) 26:3 meaning, maybe you will destroy yourself with your grief over them. Allah says:
(Perhaps, you would kill yourself in grief, over their footsteps, because they believe not in this narration.) meaning the Qur'an.
(in grief) Allah is saying, `do not destroy yourself with regret.' Qatadah said: "killing yourself with anger and grief over them." Mujahid said: "with anxiety." These are synonymous, so the meaning is: `Do not feel sorry for them, just convey the Message of Allah to them. Whoever goes the right way, then he goes the right way only for the benefit of himself. And whoever goes astray, then he strays at his own loss, so do not destroy yourself in sorrow for them.'
This World is the Place of Trial Then Allah tells us that He has made this world a temporary abode, adorned with transient beauty, andHe made it a place of trial, not a place of settlement. So He says
(Verily, we have made that which is on earth an adornment for it, in order that We may test which of them are best in deeds.) Abu Maslamah narrated from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa`id that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(This world is sweet and green, and Allah makes you generations succeeding one another, so He is watching what you will do. Beware of (the beguilements of) this world and beware of women, for the first affliction that Children of Israel suffered from was that of women.) Then Allah tells us that this world will pass away and come to an end, as He says:
(And verily, We shall make all that is on it bare, dry soil.) means, `after having adorned it, We will destroy it and make everything on it bare and dry, with no vegetation or any other benefit.' Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas that this means everything on it would be wiped out and destroyed. Mujahid said: "a dry and barren plain." Qatadah said, "A plain on which there are no trees or vegetation."
Ayahs 9-12
The Story of the People of Al-Kahf Here Allah tells us about the story of the people of Al-Kahf in brief and general terms, then Heexplains it in more detail. He says
(Do you think) -- O Muhammad --
(that the people of Al-Kahf and Ar-Raqim were a wonder among Our signs) meaning, their case was not something amazing compared to Our power and ability, for the creation of the heavens and earth, the alternation of night and day and the subjugation of the sun, moon and heavenly bodies, and other mighty signs indicate the great power of Allah and show that He is able to do whatever He wills. He is not incapable of doing more amazing things than the story of the people of the Cave. Similarly, Ibn Jurayj reported Mujahid saying about,
(Do you think that the people of Al-Kahf and Ar-Raqim were a wonder among Our signs) "Among Our signs are things that are more amazing than this." Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said:
(Do you think that the people of Al-Kahf and Ar-Raqim were a wonder among Our signs) "What I have given to you of knowledge, the Sunnah and the Book is far better than the story of the people of Al-Kahf and Ar-Raqim." Muhammad bin Ishaq said: "(It means) I have not shown My creatures a proof more amazing than the story of the people of the Al-Kahf and Ar-Raqim." iAl-Kahf refers to a cave in a mountain, which is where the young men sought refuge. With regard to the word Ar-Raqim, Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas that it is a valley near Aylah. This was also said in another narration by `Atiyah Al-`Awfi and Qatadah. Ad-Dahhak said: "As for Al-Kahf, it is a cave in the valley, and Ar-Raqim is the name of the valley." Mujahid said, "Ar-Raqim refers to their buildings." Others said it refers to the valley in which their cave was. `Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Ibn `Abbas said about Ar-Raqim: "Ka`b used to say that it was the town." Ibn Jurayj reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "Ar-Raqim is the mountain in which the cave was." Sa`id bin Jubayr said, "Ar-Raqim is a tablet of stone on which they wrote the story of the people of the Cave, then they placed it at the entrance to the Cave."
((Remember) when the young men fled for refuge to Al-Kahf. They said: "Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself, and facilitate for us our affair in the right way!") Here Allah tells us about those young men who fled from their people for the sake of their religion, fearing persecution. So they fled taking refuge in the cave of a mountain, where they hid from their people. When they entered the cave, they asked Allah to show mercy and kindness towards them,
(Our Lord! Bestow on us mercy from Yourself,) meaning, `give us Your mercy and conceal us from our people.'
(and facilitate for us our affair in the right way.) means, direct our matter well, i.e., grant us a good end. As was reported in the Hadith:
(Whatever You have decreed for us, make its consequences good).
(Therefore, We covered up their hearing in the cave for a number of years.) meaning, `We caused them to sleep when they entered the cave, and they slept for many years.'
(Then We raised them up) from that slumber, and one of them went out with his Dirhams (silver coins) to buy them some food, as it will be discussed in more detail below. Allah says:
(Then We raised them up, that We might test which of the two parties) meaning, the two parties who disputed about them,
(was best at calculating the time period that they tarried.) It was said that this refers to how long they stayed in the cave.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Ayahs 1-3

Reflection & lessons for life غور و فکر
Finding guidance, protecting our faith, and navigating the tests of modern life
Surah Al-Kahf begins with a powerful reminder: in a world full of distractions, confusion, pressure, and uncertainty, the Quran is a source of guidance that helps us understand what truly matters.
The first ten ayahs teach us about faith, truth, the temporary nature of worldly life, the danger of following beliefs without knowledge, and the importance of turning to Allah when we feel lost.
Let's reflect on these verses through the challenges we face in our daily lives, especially in today's fast-moving world.
### 1\. Ayahs 1–3: The Quran is our guide, not just a book we read
Allah begins by praising Himself for revealing the Book without deviation, making it a straight and reliable guide. It warns us about the consequences of wrongdoing and gives good news to those who believe and do good deeds.
Reflection: We live in an age where advice is everywhere. Social media tells us how to look, what to buy, how to become successful, and even what happiness should look like. Yet, despite having access to more information than any generation before us, many people still feel confused about life.
The Quran offers something deeper than temporary motivation. It gives us principles to distinguish right from wrong, success from failure, and what is beneficial from what merely looks attractive.
Real-life example:
Imagine a young professional who is offered a promotion with a much higher salary. However, getting the position requires taking credit for a colleague's work or hiding a serious mistake.
Everyone around them might say, "This is how the corporate world works. Don't miss the opportunity."
The Quran encourages us to look beyond immediate rewards. Is the decision honest? Is it fair? Will the success bring us closer to the person we want to become, or require us to compromise our values?
The right guidance may not always lead to the easiest decision, but it helps us make decisions we can live with peacefully.
A question to reflect on: When making important decisions, do we consult the guidance of Allah, or do we only follow what society considers successful?
### 2\. Ayahs 4–5: Do not follow beliefs simply because everyone repeats them
These verses warn against making grave claims about Allah without knowledge and emphasize the seriousness of speaking about matters of faith without truth or evidence.
Reflection: One of the biggest challenges of modern life is that repetition can make something seem true. A statement can go viral, an influencer can promote an idea, or a group of friends can normalize a behavior until questioning it feels uncomfortable.
But popularity does not make something true.
These verses teach us the importance of taking truth seriously, especially when speaking about Allah, religion, and matters we do not fully understand.
This lesson also encourages humility. We should not confidently make claims about Islam based on a short video, a forwarded message, or something we heard years ago without checking its authenticity.
Real-life example:
A teenager watches a social media video claiming that a particular action is definitely forbidden in Islam. The video has thousands of likes, and the comments are full of people agreeing.
Instead of immediately judging others or spreading the claim, the teenager checks the Quran, authentic hadith, and reliable scholarly explanations.
That simple decision reflects intellectual responsibility and respect for the truth.
The same principle applies outside religion. Before sharing a damaging rumor about a colleague, believing an accusation against a friend, or forwarding alarming news, we should ask: Do I actually know this is true?
A question to reflect on: How many things do we believe because we have verified them, and how many simply because everyone around us says them?
### 3\. Ayah 6: You cannot force someone to accept the truth
Allah addresses Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, acknowledging his deep grief over those who refused to believe. The verse reminds him not to let sorrow over their rejection consume him.
Reflection: This is a deeply comforting lesson for anyone who genuinely cares about another person.
Parents worry about their children. Friends worry about friends making harmful choices. A husband or wife may desperately want their partner to change. Someone who loves Islam may feel heartbroken watching a loved one drift away from it.
We can advise, encourage, support, and pray for people. But we cannot control their hearts.
Even the Prophet ﷺ, whose compassion for humanity was immense, was reminded that he should not destroy himself with grief over people's refusal to accept the message.
If this was a lesson for the Prophet ﷺ, it is certainly worth reflecting on in our own relationships.
Real-life example:
A father notices that his teenage son is spending too much time online, neglecting his responsibilities, and becoming distant from the family.
The father repeatedly criticizes him, compares him with other children, and demands immediate change. Over time, the son stops sharing his problems with him.
The father then changes his approach. He makes time to listen, discusses concerns calmly, sets reasonable boundaries, and leads by example.
The father has not abandoned his responsibility. He has learned that guidance is often more effective when accompanied by patience, compassion, and wisdom.
The same applies when advising a friend about faith or trying to help someone overcome a destructive habit.
The lesson: Care deeply, but do not assume that you are responsible for controlling every outcome. Your responsibility is to act with sincerity and wisdom; guidance ultimately belongs to Allah.
### 4\. Ayahs 7–8: The beauty of this world is a test
Allah explains that the things on earth have been made attractive as a test to reveal who does the best deeds. He then reminds us that the earth's adornment will eventually disappear.
Reflection: These verses challenge one of the strongest assumptions of modern society: that a better life means having more things.
A bigger house. A more expensive car. A higher salary. More followers. Better holidays. A lifestyle that looks impressive to others.
There is nothing inherently wrong with earning money, enjoying beautiful things, building a comfortable home, or pursuing professional success. The question is whether these things become our purpose or remain part of a life guided by faith and responsibility.
Worldly blessings are also tests of how we use them.
Money tests our honesty and generosity. Beauty tests our humility. Influence tests our integrity. Success tests whether we remember those who helped us and those who need our help.
And hardship can test our patience, gratitude, and trust in Allah.
Real-life example:
Two people receive substantial salary increases.
The first spends more to maintain an impressive lifestyle, becomes increasingly concerned about appearances, and feels dissatisfied whenever someone else buys something better.
The second enjoys some of the benefits but also supports family members, gives charity, saves responsibly, and makes time for loved ones and worship.
Both have received a worldly blessing. But they respond to that blessing differently.
The difference is not how much they own; it is how they use what they have been given.
Now imagine a person who spends years building a beautiful house, only to discover that the pursuit consumed their health, damaged family relationships, and left little time for the things that matter most.
The reminder in these verses is not that we should stop building, earning, or enjoying life. It is that nothing in this world is permanent enough to deserve our ultimate devotion.
A question to reflect on: If Allah has given us wealth, status, knowledge, or influence, are we using those blessings in ways that will benefit us beyond this temporary life?
### 5\. Ayahs 9–10: Sometimes the right response is to step away and ask Allah for guidance
Allah introduces the story of the Companions of the Cave, a group of young people who sought refuge in a cave and prayed for mercy and right guidance.
Their story begins with a decision to protect their faith in difficult circumstances.
Reflection: Young people today face pressures that previous generations experienced in different forms. There is pressure to fit in, to gain acceptance, to follow trends, and to avoid appearing different from friends or society.
Sometimes, doing what is right can make a person feel isolated.
The Companions of the Cave remind us that being young does not prevent someone from possessing conviction, courage, and a sincere relationship with Allah.
They did not begin their journey by claiming to have every answer. They turned to Allah and asked for two things: mercy and right guidance in their affairs.
Their prayer is particularly relevant to our lives because we often want Allah to give us the outcome we have already chosen, rather than asking Him to guide us toward what is truly good.
Real-life example:
A university student finds that their friendship group increasingly revolves around mocking religious beliefs, pressuring people into harmful habits, or treating dishonesty as normal.
The student worries that standing apart will mean losing friends and feeling alone.
Rather than becoming arrogant or hostile toward others, the student seeks better company, remains respectful, and asks Allah to guide them through the situation.
They might pray:
“O Allah, grant me Your mercy and guide me toward what is right.”
This reflects the spirit of the prayer in ayah 10.
The lesson is not that we should run away from every difficult situation. It is that when our surroundings threaten our values, we should have the courage to seek a healthier environment and ask Allah for direction.
Sometimes the most important step is to leave a harmful influence. At other times, it is to remain in a difficult environment while holding firmly to what is right.
A question to reflect on: When we feel confused, pressured, or uncertain about our future, do we turn to Allah for guidance, or do we rely only on our own plans and the opinions of others?
### Five practical lessons for modern life
1\. Let the Quran guide your decisions.
Read with the intention of understanding and applying its teachings, not merely completing a daily reading target.
2\. Verify before you believe or share.
Do not let viral content, rumors, or popular opinions replace knowledge and sound judgment.
3\. Guide people with compassion.
Advise sincerely, be patient, and recognize that you cannot control another person's choices or heart.
4\. Enjoy blessings without becoming attached to them.
Work hard and pursue success, but measure your life by your character, deeds, and responsibilities, not appearances alone.
5\. Ask Allah for direction when life becomes confusing.
You do not need to have every answer before turning to Allah. Sincere prayer, wise action, and patience can help you navigate uncertainty.
### A final reflection: What are we really living for?
The first ten ayahs of Surah Al-Kahf invite us to look at life differently.
We live in a world that constantly asks us to prove ourselves. We are encouraged to earn more, achieve more, show more, and compare ourselves with others. Even our moments of rest can become opportunities to measure our lives against someone else's carefully selected highlights.
But these verses direct our attention toward deeper questions.
Are we living according to truth, or simply following the crowd?
Are we using our blessings wisely, or allowing them to distract us from our purpose?
Are we treating people with compassion, even when they refuse to listen to us?
And when life becomes uncertain, do we remember to seek the mercy and guidance of Allah?
The story of the Companions of the Cave begins with young people facing a difficult world. They did not ask Allah merely to make their circumstances comfortable. They asked Him for mercy and right guidance.
Perhaps that is a prayer we need more often.
We may not know what tomorrow holds. We may not be able to change every person we love. We may not understand why certain difficulties come into our lives. But we can continue to seek truth, act with sincerity, use our blessings responsibly, and ask Allah to guide our steps.
Because the real measure of a successful life is not simply what we achieve in this world, but how we live, what we stand for, and whether our deeds reflect the guidance we have been given.
### A dua inspired by ayah 10
This is a personal supplication inspired by the meaning of the verse, rather than a separate Quranic quotation.
“O Allah, grant us Your mercy, guide us toward what is right, protect our faith in times of confusion, help us use Your blessings wisely, and make our deeds pleasing to You. When we feel lost, bring us closer to Your guidance. Ameen.”
Quranic reference: Surah Al-Kahf (18:1–10).
