Description: Published in 1974, Gather Together in My Name is the second autobiographical volume by Maya Angelou. The memoir picks up immediately after the birth of her son, Guy, when Angelou is a seventeen-year-old single mother in post-World War II California. The book traces her turbulent young adulthood as she navigates poverty, racism, and a series of difficult jobs and relationships—ranging from working as a cook and a dancer to running a brothel and engaging in sex work. After a crisis involving her son's brief disappearance and a close encounter with the devastating realities of drug addiction, Angelou finds the inner strength to pull her life together for herself and her young child.
